Sally Kirkland Does Public Relations for Spirit with John Morton at the Oscars® 2004 by Sally Kirkland
My favorite experience in my life is being with the Travelers. Over the years I have been such a lucky girl to have had John-Roger escort me to the Oscars®. It’s very hard to put into words the joy and excitement of being on the Red Carpet with J-R. Well, this year beloved Jsu Garcia encouraged John Morton to go as my escort and, by God, John said “Yes.”
So off we went with the limo driver Tony. We pulled up at the Kodak Theater at 3:08 p.m. and as fate or God would have it, I was the first “female celebrity” to pose for the fashion press. All they cared about was the dress. So I started to put the fake fur and purse on the ground and John, bless his Soul, said “No give them to me.” I couldn’t believe it -- like Jesus washing the feet of the disciples -- there I am watching the Traveler holding my fake fur and bag while I did the twirl the fashion photographers wanted. It was pretty humbling. We got through that, then there we were in front of George Panakio and Roger Ebert from Channel 7. After getting through the fashion chit chat, I proudly said to Roger Ebert, “This is John Morton, the Spiritual Director of my church, the Movement of Spiritual Inner Awareness.” Wow! Roger & John shook hands. Roger, who had recently been ill, lit up. And, all I could think of was my MSIA ministerial ordination blessing from John-Roger in 1976 including the words: “Courage in the face of public scrutiny, and public relations for Spirit” or words to that effect. Wow. I got such joy watching the response from all the media thinking John Morton was some handsome movie star and hearing that he is my spiritual teacher. He looked stunning. Everybody was staring. I was later to find out close to 46 million people saw that 4 minute spot on Channel 7 and however many on Channel 5, and Channel 2, etc. But Channel 7 was world wide. Thank you John, thank you J-R, thank you Jsu Garcia. Thank you John for giving me the opportunity to do my ministry. Watching and experiencing John’s kindness and sincere enthusiasm with people, be it the media or the Hollywood Stars, was wonderful. Later at "The Lord of the Rings" party we were hanging out and there was an amazing moment when John Morton was asked to do an impromptu baby blessing. John was so gracious to everybody. God bless you John for making me look and feel so good. |
